Poverty

This module encounters the multi-faceted nature of poverty in both, developing and industrialised countries

Factors influencing poverty

„There is more to extreme poverty than unfortunate circumstances.“ Bono in „Give us the money“

Poverty is a complex, multi-dimensional problem and is influenced by many factors. Often the reasons for and consequences of poverty are mutually reinforcing, for example, hunger may be both a cause and a consequence of poverty.

The documentary illustrates that Bono and Bob Geldof firstly took purely economic approaches to their goal. The musicians quickly noticed, however, that the reduction of poverty is a much more complex task that cannot be solved solely by financial means.

The reasons that are specifically mentioned in the film for the emergence and persistence of hunger and extreme poverty are drought (natural disaster), war, authoritarian regimes, and the debt of developing countries. But the factors influencing HIV / AIDS, education, the existing rules of international trade and ODA (Official Development Assistance) are also addressed indirectly. Unemployment, technological deficit, population growth, inadequate infrastructure, migration, age, physical or mental impairment and gender are additional risk factors.

Now learn about the following three influential factors in more detail:

  • Education
  • Health
  • Gender
