National climate protection measures
Along with international agreements, climate protection measures and laws are also enacted at a national level to stem the growth in emissions. As a result of a decision taken by the European Parliament in 2011, the member states of the EU have passed a set of climate protection laws.
Measures set out in these laws are:
- Increasing energy efficiency
- The increased use of renewable energy sources
- The consideration of climate protection during spatial planning
- Mobility management
- Reducing waste
- Expanding natural carbon sinks
- Economic support for climate protection measures
Despite the legal commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate climate protection, there is still a long way to go. More than 2/3 of energy required still comes from fossil fuels and in the last few years there has been no reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the European climate law is under review.
