This topic speaks about human rights, what it is, how human rights are related to us and how to protect them
Social media and human rights
Social media such as Facebook or Twitter has become an integral part of our lives. However, they do not only serve to connect us with friends and share the latest photos from our vacation, but can also improve the realisation of human rights, mostly in countries where the government has monopoly over the mainstream media, where they can offer alternative information and other points of view. They played a crucial role during the so called Arab spring, but they also play an important role in distributing alternative views in areas where traditional media is controlled by authoritarian regimes. They are also a very natural channel for younger generations, which is another reason why they should not be omitted.
However, we always have to be cautious about them, as they often provide non-proved and biased information. To learn how to assess provided information, check the module on critical thinking.
