Human rights
This topic speaks about human rights, what it is, how human rights are related to us and how to protect them
How are our human rights guaranteed and protected?
“We stand today at the threshold of a great event both in the life of the United Nations and in the life of mankind. This declaration may well become the international Magna Carta for all men everywhere.” Eleanor Roosevelt
Our human rights are protected by various international human rights instruments, treaties and other international documents, and in spite of the fact that Slovakia is a signatory country of virtually all relevant agreements and claims to follow them, Slovak institutions do not always follow its commitments. Balli Marzecová was deprived of her right of free association and of free speech when she peacefully protested against a politician. Many others are deprived of their rights for a fair and timely trial, citizens of Pezinok town were deprived of the right to decide about their environment. And list could easily continue...
What shall we do when we think that our or somebody else’s human rights were violated?
There are actually more options. It depends from what perspective we look at it. We can seek for assistance in civil society organisations, we can look for justice in the court or spread information about the abuse via media.
