Globalisation

The module explains global interdependencies, its controversial aspects and how it affects our daily lives

Globalisation can be changed

Globalisation, together with the associated interconnections, can happen both at the political and economic as well as individual levels. While some states, such as China, use economic reforms to contribute to improving living conditions for the majority of the population, NGOs are also standing up for the principles of social justice, environmental sustainability, democratic organization and orientation towards the public interest.

The Swiss NGO Swiss Solidarity is, for example, takes part in this campaign for fair trade coffee. It is about encouraging multinationals such as Nestlé - which cover large markets with their products - to implement the business model of fairer trade. It is a model that is based on fair trade. The focus is on a stable income for small farmers and better working conditions. In addition, the environment is an important aspect of fair trade, genetically-modified seeds and the use of toxic agrochemicals are banned, organic farming methods, however, are encouraged.
