Mobile telephone production
The extracted raw materials are shipped to South East Asia for use, mostly to China. More than half of all the world’s mobile phones are produced there. The large brand producers have contracted out their production here. This is cheap and flexible. These companies in turn have suppliers who do the contracted work for them. They simply buy products as they need them.
SACOM, a Chinese non-governmental organisation which campaigns amongst other things for the improvement of working conditions in the supply chain for mobile telephone companies, released this video in 2005 to accompany the opening of a new Foxconn factory in China. Foxconn supplies many electronics companies and has over 1.2 million employees.
