From humanitarian crisis to development

Where is the border line?

Development is not done to people or for people, but with people. From Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert book: When Helping hurts

When you turn on your TV, you may be shattered by news about the tsunami which destroyed Indonesia and left millions of people without food, appropriate clothing and shelter. After a break the news continues with a report about the growing number of homeless people in your town, who are also without food, appropriate clothing and shelter. At the first sight the reaction to the mentioned crises might be very similar. People in both situations need food, appropriate clothing and shelter and providing these things to both groups seem to be the right solution. But when you think deeper about these 2 reports, there is a little bit of doubt about it. People who are facing these 2 crises are in different situations and require different types of intervention. There are 3 basic types of interventions:

  • Relief (Humanitarian aid)
  • Rehabilitation
  • Development cooperation
